Windows 10 and stuff not working.

My Microsoft Wireless Display Adaptator doesn't work.

PC evolution

Video cards are the last PC item that hasn't been shrunked properly.  Integrated video cards are mostly useful for watching movies, web browsing and office work.

Also the Intel NUC would be nicer if they were all fanless.  Fitted with heatsinks on chips.

All quiet on the nic front

Why doesn't Intel work on bringing 10 Gigabits nics to consumers?

Featureless Universal Apps

It's that time again and we've been served a fresh batch of new Microsoft Metro Modern Universal apps.

Still not implemented

App stays minimised when double-clicking a new MP3.

I will miss you

The Windows Phone email app is the best out there.

Console gaming on Windows 10

I've been playing Minecraft Windows 10 edition. It works with keyboard/mouse/gamepad/touch. And connects to Xbox Live. This is what people wanted from Microsoft.

Windows 10 first impressions

I really like it. It's everything Windows 8 should have been.

The Cortana search bar doesn't work for me. It just open a web page to Bing. But I find myself using the Search box all the time. Initially, I thought it was a waste of precious TaskBar space.

Fate of horrible UI design

Today, I tried out Inbox by Gmail.  Just like the new Google Music UI, its just another clumsy software by Google.

Mark my words: Material design will have the same fate as Metro UI.

PS: the person who invented the Carousel UI metaphor should be punch in the balls/ovaries.  I'm looking at you Netflix.

"Eating our own Dogfood"

If I attempt to view an attachment image from Outlook.com, it asks me if I want to add it to Onedrive or download to my desktop.  I JUST WANT TO VIEW THE PICTURE!

Sometimes, it feels like the people at Microsoft don't actually use their own software.

More old stuff

An old Dell Inspiron 2200 running Plan 9 from Bell Labs.  No serial port to plug in my Honeywell mouse.

Gotta get that Ethernet port working.  Hard mode: Get WIFI operational.

Edit: the 44pins HDD is dead.  Boots when it feels like it.  :(

Old serial mouse

It's an Honeywell Opto-Mechanical serial mouse.  Let's just say that when laser/optical mouse came along, it was just more of the same.  Works great with Plan 9's Rio windowing system.  It was my mouse for a long time and was last hooked up to a Windows Home Server.

Missed opportunities

I'd love to have an Intel NUC running Avaton CPUs.

I must be the only one who wants one.  Or there isn't much of a market for micro-servers.

It's high time for Microsoft to admit it: their dotnet platform is a massive failure.  Everywhere it goes, it fails.

  • Metro (Win8)
  • Metro (WP7/8)
  • Silverlight (cancelled)
There's a reason why Windows Explorer isn't a Universal App.

There are no good Bluetooth mouse/keyboard/gamepad on the market.

The closet thing I have found for a Bluetooth mouse is the Microsoft Sculpt Touch Mouse.

It's got this Haptic touch crap.  And lacks mouse buttons 4 and 5.

Object-oriented programming is like herpes,
Sane people don't want it on their 'junk'.

dot.net is garbage
java is garbage.
C++ is garbage

Windows annoyances

  • Windows handles bad clusters pretty bad.
  • Can't put the users folder on another hard drive without a hack.

Google Play Books is broken.  Can't open most Epubs and PDFs.

Next on my shopping list

From Crucial:
mSATA MX200 SSD

From Corsair:
Obsidian Series® 350D Windowed Micro ATX PC Case

From somewhere else:
a PCIe to mSATA adapter, SATA to mSATA adapter or USB to mSATA adapter.

I am still looking for a micro-server with ECC RAM.

There's nothing worthwhile out there.  Nothing stands out.  I don't want all-in-ones like Drobo/QNAP/Synology.

The Dell PowerEdge T20 is a nice one:

From: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1797437

What I look for in a micro-server:
  1. ECC RAM (a must)
  2. Small footprint
  3. Fanless (if possible)
Edit: Euro-Dell has additional accessories for the T20s.

Object oriented anything.

What I want to know is what are 8" and below Windows 10 tablet are gonna look like?  And if some are going to be ARM based.

Good old Games can do a proper web store with very few resources.

Microsoft still can't so a proper web store with very large resources.

I just need 2000$+ USD for this 3D Printer For PCBs.

Saturday, March 14, 2015

This years' Google Nexuses are way too pricey.

The Nexus 9 is 429,00 $ and up.

And the Nexus 6 is 729,00 $ and up.

How is pricing stuff at upper class prices going to appeal to the mass market?
Other than iPads, Surface Pros and new Nexuses, Tablets suck.  Especially Androids.

Here's the HP Stream 7.  If one looks at the HP support forums, users are complaining about audio problems and slow Wireless Networking when using Bluetooth peripherals.  I blame Intel for that last bug.  Clovertrail tablets and Nucs have terrible Bluetooth drivers.

No one can buy an Android under 200$ that will have upgrades for the next year and a half.  Except for the Nexuses, Android tablets are terrible purchases.  So are most of their phones.

Also why do cheap tablets bother with back facing cameras?  Instead of having two mediocre cameras, why not just put a better front facing that has at least 2 megapixels.  0,3 megapixels is crap for anything.

Oh Skyrim, I just left World of Warcraft to come back to play you.  I had forgotten how badly you were programmed.  You feel like a bad console-to-PC port.
  • Select Windowed mode and the game window stays stuck in the left upper corner
  • Very unfriendly with dual monitors
  • Does not play well with Alt+Tabbing
  • The mouse acceleration is slow

Modern PC chassis are built for the 90ies.  Who needs three 5¼ external bays?  We could use thinner and cases with shorter depths.

Chrome OS Switches To "Freon" Graphics Stack To Replace X11

I love articles like this.  Comments are good too.

Oh yes!  Surface Phone I would buy one.
American Dad is probably the only TV I have watched in the last decade.  Thank you Netflix.  Roger is the best alien.  Alf sucks.

Google Chrome is a crashy pos.  The last releases are so buggy.  And the ChromeOS releases haven't been spared problems: wubbly wifi, restore pages in reload is still broken, flash crashing...
Atari MEGA 1

I remember when companies put money in design.  Todays' stuff looks the same.  :(

My wishlist

I never stopped wanting things.  My need amplified when I discovered the Internet.

I will update this list often.
